Secure storage of firearms during winter break:
As we prepare for the winter break, many members of our community visit the homes of friends and other family members. In this festive time, remember that secure firearm storage—storing guns locked, unloaded and separate from ammunition—can save children’s lives.
Here is a quick script for a text or conversation starter if you know the homeowner has firearms in their home or on their property (for example, in their car's glove compartment):
“We are looking forward to spending time with you and with the whole family. I know I have never asked this before, but how are your guns stored? The kids get into everything and I don’t want us to spend the day looking over our shoulders worried about them, or the rest of the kids. (Option: I’m happy to purchase gun locks if you don’t have them).”
You can find this conversation prompt and many others on the Be SMART website (besmartforkids.org). Be SMART is the Wilmette Police Department's partner for promoting the secure storage of weapons.
Secure all guns in homes and vehicles
Model responsible behavior around guns
Ask about the presence of unsecured firearms in other homes your child visits
Recognize the role of guns in suicide
Tell your peers to Be SMART

Walking/Biking/Scooters:
We encourage families to practice the route to Harper before the start of school as well as how to park their bike or scooter safely in the bike and scooter racks. Bikes and scooters are not allowed to be parked on the sidewalks or north field walkway.
This is also the perfect time to practice locking up bikes and scooters. Make sure your student knows how to use the lock and remember any combination. Safety is our number one priority and we highly recommend locking up modes of transportation. Bikes and scooters should never be left at Harper overnight. Harper is not liable for any missing bike or scooter.
Scooters and E-Scooters must also follow the biking rules. Bikes and scooters must be walked when on the sidewalk in front of Harper for everyone's safety.
We also recommend that parents/guardians accompany our youngest students to begin the school year.
